CRISPR-Cas9 Mediated Gene Editing for Enhanced Drought Resistance in Oryza sativa (Rice) Cultivars

Prof. Linda Watson, Dr. Vikram Sarabhai Jr.

Climate-induced water scarcity poses a major threat to global rice cultivation. This paper presents a CRISPR-Cas9 genome editing method to knock out the negative regulator of drought stress response, OsDST, in regional indica rice varieties. The gene-edited plants exhibited enhanced stomatal control and a 26% higher survival rate under severe drought conditions without displaying yield penalties in normal fields.

Optimizing Yeast Fermentation Lifecycles via Microfluidic Bioreactor Environmental Controls

Dr. Sophie Dubois, Prof. Yosuke Sato

This study presents a novel microfluidic platform designed to analyze single-cell Saccharomyces cerevisiae yeast dynamics under shifting glucose and pH levels. By regulating micro-environments in real time, we successfully identified the precise triggers for cell senescence during industrial ethanol fermentation. The proposed dynamic nutrient-feeding schedule increases overall yield efficiency by 14.5% compared to batch processing.

Biodegradation of Microplastics in Estuarine Sediments using Genetically Modified Pseudomonas putida

Dr. Ingrid Larsen, Prof. Carlos Gomez

Estuarine ecosystems act as severe accumulation zones for plastic microparticles. In this research, we engineered a soil bacterium, Pseudomonas putida, to express a highly active PET-hydrolase enzyme. Lab scale testing shows that the engineered strain achieves a 48% weight degradation of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) films within 21 days under low-temperature saline conditions, presenting a highly promising bio-remediation solution.
